Canadians depend on the ability to make and receive payments through their financial institutions. As new payment products and service providers enter the highly evolving payments marketplace, the Canadian Payments Association’s (CPA) national clearing and settlement systems anchor Canada’s financial sector.
Every day, over 120 financial institutions in Canada – from the country’s biggest banks to individual credit unions and caisses populaires clear more than 20 million payments, worth over $180 billion, through the CPA’s systems, including cheques, wire transfers, direct deposits, pre-authorized debits, bill payments and point-of-sale debits.
As stewards of the country’s clearing and settlement systems, and on the basis of the mandate given to it by Parliament, the CPA not only operates the systems but also develops the policies and rules that support the safety and soundness, efficiency, accessibility and innovation in Canada’s payments systems.
Sound payments systems rest on sound public policy which in turn rests on sound research. This outstanding national organization is creating the new role of Research Director, to drive and build CPA’s research in the areas of payments systems and financial infrastructure issues.
As the new Research Director, you will take responsibility for the creation of a leading-edge research function capable of providing thoughtful, in-depth information and publications for CPA’s members and stakeholders. Managing a small team, and working closely with the organization’s Executive Leadership Team, you will define CPA’s research agenda and direction and take a global view on issues involving payments systems and the related policy issues. Taking a long-term, strategic approach, the new Research Director will help establish CPA as a go-to source for credible information and data that will help shape Canada`s national clearing and settlement system for years to come.
As an ideal candidate for the role, you possess a PhD plus five years of experience, or a Master’s degree coupled with 10 years of experience, leading a high-performing research unit, ideally in the areas of payments or financial systems. You are collaborative in nature, with strong communication and presentation skills, and have the demonstrated ability to frame, and execute, high-quality theoretical and empirical research programs. A mentor and team-builder, you will bring a culture of research excellence to the CPA, and provide the organization with a strong research base from which to operate and influence.
