We are presently recruiting for an Associate, External Portfolio Management (EPM) in the Public Market Investments (PMI) department.  Based in Toronto and reporting to the Senior Portfolio Manager and Portfolio Manager, the Associate plays a key role in making and managing hedge fund investments globally.   They will assist in evaluating potential fund managers, conducting research, developing investment recommendations, participating in the negotiation and execution of fund investments, and managing investments. Strategy focus will be Discretionary and Systematic Macro.
EPM engages and monitors external managers in public markets across all trading styles, asset classes, and geographies.  EPM manages a portfolio of external managers that complements our total portfolio.  EPM uses both quantitative and qualitative tools in this function.

Role Specific Accountabilities
A) Assist in the Monitoring of Hedge Fund Investments:
  • Proactively support the day-to-day monitoring and analysis of existing external managers, peer universe, and relevant markets traded (including building robust and flexible tools to enhance this as well as managing information and document flow).
  • Capture relevant data and provide an on-going view of the performance, exposures, and risks of the managers while working closely with portfolio managers, portfolio construction, risk management, various other internal teams, and external partners.
  • Research and provide on-going views on the universe of hedge fund managers in the strategy covered as well as important drivers and measures for underlying markets.
  • Prepare research on, participate, and document regular meetings and calls with hedge fund managers and market participants.
  • Assist in presenting findings to the EPM team and the Board Investment Committee as required.
  • Coordinate with CPPIB Finance & Operations, Risk Management, and Total Portfolio Management teams with respect to monitoring ongoing investments.

B) Analyze Investment Opportunities:
  • Research, analyze, and evaluate hedge fund managers.
  • Activities include preparation for external manager meetings, post-meeting analyses and documentation, detailed risk and attribution analysis, portfolio impact, simulating fee alternatives, writing investment recommendation, and managing information and document flow.
  • Develop independent, fact-based views on external managers.
  • Attend and participate in EPM investment recommendation meetings.

C) Assist in Developing External Portfolio Management Strategy:
  • Assist Portfolio Managers in evaluating the attractiveness of addressing new hedge fund strategies.
  • Perform market research on various hedge fund strategies.
  • Perform quantitative analysis to understand the impact and/or complementary nature of various strategies with the CPPIB portfolio.

If you possess the following, we’d like to hear from you:
  • Masters or higher degree(s) in fields preferably related to Business, Mathematical Finance, Economics, Statistics, Mathematics, or Engineering.
  • 5+ years relevant work experience in financial markets.  Preference given to those with experience on a trading desk, at a hedge fund, or at a buy-side organization.  Previous manager selection experience is an asset.
  • Sound knowledge of and demonstrated interest in economics, fixed income, finance, trading strategies, and econometrics/statistics.  A multi- or cross- asset class background is a strong positive.
  • Demonstrated qualitative skills (e.g. can attend and contribute to manager meetings, take detailed notes and share their findings with the team and group head).

  • Record of meeting deadlines and the ability to work well under pressure.
  • Flexibility, adaptability, and initiative. Candidate needs to be resourceful and able to manage multiple priorities.
